The bigger picture
Small rides, massive impact
Carpooling is one of the simplest ways students can fight climate change and reduce traffic.
4.6 lbs
CO₂ per passenger car per mile
The average car emits 4.6 metric tons of CO₂ each year. Carpooling with just one other person cuts that in half.
54 hrs
Wasted in traffic per year
The average commuter loses 54 hours annually to traffic. Fewer cars on the road means everyone moves faster.
$1,200+
Saved annually per student
Students who carpool 3 days a week can save over $1,200 a year on gas, parking, and vehicle wear.
40%
Reduction in road congestion
Studies show that if just 10% more commuters carpooled, rush-hour traffic congestion could drop by 40%.

🌍 Environmental Impact
Why Carpooling Matters
The science is clear: fewer cars on the road saves the planet, saves your wallet, and saves your sanity.
Carbon Emissions
Cars are a major climate problem
Transportation accounts for about 29% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, making it the largest single contributor to climate change in the country. Personal vehicles — cars and trucks — make up the vast majority of that figure.
The average passenger car emits 4.6 metric tons of CO₂ per year. A typical school has 1,500 students. If even 30% carpooled, that school alone could prevent thousands of tons of carbon from entering the atmosphere annually.
Did you know?
🚗
1 car → 1 person
Most school commute trips carry only the driver. Average car occupancy during school rush: 1.09 people.
🌱
2 people = 50% fewer emissions
Adding one passenger immediately cuts per-person emissions in half. Four people? Down to 25%.
⛽
Gas prices keep rising
Teen drivers spend an average of $1,800/year on gas. Carpooling 3 days a week slashes that by 60%.
Traffic & Mental Health
Driving alone is hard on everyone
Traffic, stress, and isolation are real problems for teen commuters. Carpooling solves all three.
😤
Stress & Road Rage
Studies show solo commuters report significantly higher stress levels than those who ride with others. Having company literally reduces cortisol levels.
🚦
Traffic Congestion
School drop-off zones create massive daily traffic spikes. Research shows carpooling just 10% of school trips could cut congestion by up to 40%.
🤝
Social Connection
Young adults who commute with peers report better social wellbeing. Shared routines build friendships that last far beyond graduation.
💰
Financial Relief
Teen drivers face real financial pressure. Carpooling splits gas costs and reduces wear-and-tear on vehicles, keeping more money in student pockets.

📖 Getting Started
How Commyute Works
From signup to your first ride — here's everything you need to know about joining your school's carpool community.
1
Create a verified account
Sign up with your full name, age, school, and a parent/guardian contact. You'll also upload a photo ID or school-issued document (like a student ID or enrollment letter) to verify you're actually enrolled. This keeps our community student-only.
2
Administrator approval
Each school has a designated admin (a teacher, counselor, or staff member) who reviews enrollment documents. This extra layer ensures no one outside your school can access your carpool group. Approval typically takes 24–48 hours.
3
Set your home area & preferences
Enter your general neighborhood (we only store approximate location — never your exact address). Set your schedule, how far you're willing to drive, and whether you can offer rides, need them, or both.
4
Browse your neighbor map
The Neighbor Map shows verified classmates in your area. Each pin shows a student's first name and how far they are from you. No exact addresses are ever shown publicly.
5
Send a ride request or message
Click on a classmate and send them a carpool request. Include your preferred schedule, compensation type (free / cash / baked goods 🍪), and any notes. They accept or decline from their dashboard.
6
Build your carpool schedule
Once you've matched, use the Schedule Builder to assign driving days across the week. Commyute reminds each driver the night before it's their turn. You can add up to 4 students per carpool group.
Compensation Options
Commyute is flexible. You decide how your carpool group handles costs.
🆓
Free
Neighbors helping neighbors — no money involved, just goodwill and shared rides.
💵
Cash Contribution
Riders chip in a small agreed amount to help cover gas. Set your own rate together.
🍪
Baked Goods
Trade cookies, muffins, or brownies for a ride. The most delicious way to commute.
🔒 Your Safety First
Built with Safety at Its Core
Commyute is designed from the ground up to keep students safe. Multiple layers of verification protect every user.
Verification Layers
3-step verification for every user
✅ Step 1: Email & identity verification on signup
✅ Step 2: School enrollment document upload
✅ Step 3: Admin approval from school staff
Only students with all three steps completed can view the Neighbor Map or send messages. You will never interact with someone who hasn't been verified by your own school's staff.
Privacy
Your exact location is never shared
Commyute only stores your neighborhood — not your street or house number. The map shows approximate zones, not addresses. Your precise location is never visible to other users.
Exact pickup details are shared only between confirmed carpool partners via the private messaging system — never on the public map.
🛡 Parent/Guardian Transparency
Parents can request read-only access to their student's carpool schedule and confirmed partners at any time.
